I'm Lesley Ford, a multi award-winning clinical hypnotherapist based in Cheltenham, working with clients online across the UK.

What is anxiety and why does it happen?


Anxiety is your mind and body's threat response, a survival mechanism that evolved to keep you safe. 


When your brain perceives danger, it triggers a cascade of physical and emotional responses designed to prepare you to fight, flee or freeze. 


The problem is that in modern life, this same system can be triggered by emails, social situations, health worries, driving, or simply the thought of something going wrong, things that aren't genuinely life-threatening but that your nervous system is treating as if they are.


For many people, anxiety becomes a background state rather than an occasional response. You might feel on edge most of the time without knowing why, avoid situations that feel overwhelming, struggle to switch off, or find yourself catastrophising even when you know logically that you're safe. 


This is incredibly common, and it's not a character flaw or a sign of weakness. It's your nervous system stuck in a pattern it learned somewhere along the way.


What types of anxiety does hypnotherapy help with?


Anxiety shows up differently for everyone, and I work with a wide range of anxiety-related experiences. General anxiety and GAD, where worry feels constant and free-floating with no single obvious cause. Social anxiety, where interactions with other people feel overwhelming, exposing or threatening. Health anxiety, where the mind fixates on physical symptoms and worst-case medical scenarios. 

Panic attacks, which can strike without warning and leave you feeling frightened and out of control. Overthinking and chronic worry, where the mind races through every possible outcome and refuses to settle.


Work and performance anxiety, where pressure, deadlines or visibility at work create persistent dread. 


And driving anxiety, which for many people starts as a single difficult experience and gradually grows into something that limits daily life significantly.


Whatever form your anxiety takes, the underlying patterns are often remarkably similar, and hypnotherapy addresses those patterns at their root.



Why does anxiety feel worse when nothing is wrong?


This is one of the most common things people describe when they first get in touch with me. You're sitting at home, nothing bad is happening, and yet your chest is tight and your mind is spinning. It feels confusing and frustrating, if there's nothing to worry about, why does it feel like this?


The answer lies in how the unconscious mind works.

Anxiety doesn't always need a present-moment trigger. Once the pattern is established, the mind can generate the feeling of anxiety automatically, almost like a habit. 

It's also scanning constantly for potential problems, which means it can find something to worry about in almost any situation. 


Understanding this is actually the first step towards changing it, because it means the anxiety is coming from a learned pattern, not from the world actually being dangerous.


How does hypnotherapy help with anxiety?


Hypnotherapy works differently from traditional talking therapies because it works directly with the unconscious mind, the part where anxious patterns, emotional responses and learned behaviours are stored and run automatically. Rather than just discussing anxiety at a conscious level, hypnotherapy gets underneath it.


In a state of deep focussed attention, your conscious mind quietens and we're able to access the deeper layers of the mind where the anxiety pattern originates. From there, we can gently reduce the emotional charge attached to triggers, reframe the way the mind interprets threat, and begin to build new, calmer automatic responses in place of the anxious ones.


Over the course of a programme, clients typically find that the constant background noise of anxiety begins to settle. Triggers that once felt overwhelming become manageable. Sleep improves. Overthinking reduces. And gradually, a sense of genuine calm begins to feel not just possible, but natural.


Sessions draw on specialist techniques including parts therapy and timeline therapy, tailored entirely to your experience of anxiety and what's driving it for you specifically.


What does a hypnotherapy programme for anxiety involve?


Because anxiety shows up differently for everyone, I take time to really understand what's going on for you before designing your programme. After a free initial consultation, I put together a personalised plan built entirely around your needs and goals.


Most clients work with me across four to six sessions, depending on the nature and complexity of their anxiety, with each session building on the last. The programme moves at a pace that feels right for you, I don't rush the process, and I don't keep people in therapy longer than they need to be. Many clients are genuinely surprised by how much shifts in a relatively short space of time.


Sessions take place online via video call, so you can access support from the comfort and privacy of your own home, wherever you are in the UK. Your programme includes a free 45-minute consultation, four to six tailored hypnotherapy sessions, recordings of most sessions to listen back to between appointments, bespoke audio recordings to support your progress, and WhatsApp support throughout.
